About LHM Healthcare Ltd.

The LHM Healthcare Group provides a range of clinical and specialist services to the NHS, private commissioners, the Armed Forces, private patients and commercial clients since 2000.

Organisational Structure

We have established commissioning arrangements with NHS England Specialist Commissioning Group providing a Hyperbaric service on behalf of the NHS.

LHM Healthcare currently operates from two centres, one at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, London, and the other at the James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth.

Both facilities are fully registered with the Care Quality Commission and are staffed, equipped and registered to admit critically ill patients. Both facilities are integrated into their host hospital’s Directorates of Emergency Medicine / Critical Care and Surgery.

Together, our centres employ over 40 healthcare professionals in full and part-time posts, including the Medical Director, Hyperbaric physicians, nurses experienced in dealing with problem wounds, Hyperbaric technologists and administrative staff.

Clinical members of staff include NHS consultants, physicians and nurses seconded to the Department for Hyperbaric and Wound Care duties.

Doctor’s Line Manager

Kimberley started working at LHM in 2007 as a chamber operator and attendant while studying for a Batchelor’s degree in Physiotherapy at Stratford University in East London. After completing a Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Course at the ATMO college in San Antonio, Texas, and after establishing her own private physiotherapy clinic in Sudbury, Suffolk, she took up the opportunity to step into the family business a few years later. In 2007 she qualified as a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (NBDHMT) and as a Hyperbaric Supervisor at LHM the following year.

Since 2012 she has worked as General Manager for LHM’s two centres in London and Great Yarmouth and took over from Phil as Managing Director in May 2024.

Kimberley’s interests are scuba diving and skiing.

Philip Sayers BSc CHT

Phil Sayers, founder of London Hyperbaric Medicine (LHM) Healthcare, boasts an impressive career spanning over 49 years in the fields of diving and hyperbaric medicine. In 1976 he graduated from Swansea University with a Batchelor’s degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography. His diving journey began in 1976 when he worked as a research diver for the Cambridge Coral Starfish Research Group in the Red Sea. He then joined the British Antarctic Survey, where he served as a Research Diver/Assistant on the island of South Georgia.

Phil went on to establish himself as a commercial diving contractor, working in the harbours and waterways of West Germany and Berlin. His expertise soon expanded to the development of commercial and military diving systems for the German and Swedish armed forces. In 1997, he played a pivotal role in designing the first CE-certified multiplace Hyperbaric Therapy Chamber in Europe. His work led to the delivery of chambers to two German university hospitals and the Maldives.

In 1999, Phil successfully bid for and won an NHS contract to supply and manage a state-of-the-art Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy service at Whipps Cross University Hospital in East London. This achievement was followed in 2007 by the establishment of a second hyperbaric facility at James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth.

In 2024, Phil stepped down as Managing Director of LHM Healthcare, passing the leadership to his daughter, Kimberley. Despite this transition, he will continue to play an active role in the company’s management for years to come.

Dr. Pieter Bothma

Medical Director LHM Healthcare (East of England)

Dr Bothma completed his medical training at the University of Cape Town. He then trained in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

He relocated to the UK in 2002. He was Clinical Lead for Intensive-Care during the Covid pandemic and previously was Anaesthesia Lead at James Paget University Hospital (JPUH). He is Medical Director of the East of England Hyperbaric Unit at JPUH for the past 17 years and previously Medical Director of LHM Healthcare at Whipps Cross Hospital in London for 10 years.

He is Chairman of the British Hyperbaric Association and is currently representing the BHA on the ECHM (European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine) Board of Representatives.

Other interests are in the fields of Patient Safety and Clinical Governance, Difficult Airways, treatment of critically ill patients in the hyperbaric chamber and mortality studies.

His publications are in the field of intensive-care, Hyperbaric medicine and specifically on air / gas embolism. Since 2019 he has also trained to become a Medical Examiner working with the regional coroners.

Dr. Vivek Srivastava is an experienced Hyperbaric Medicine specialist with extensive training and expertise in the field. He received formal training in diving and hyperbaric medicine at the University of Aberdeen and has since worked as a Consultant in Hyperbaric Medicine at leading centers, including Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the London Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Centre.

He contributes to the advancement of hyperbaric medicine through his participation in national and international conferences. A dedicated educator, he regularly presents on hyperbaric medicine topics, including decompression illness and the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in diabetic foot management.

When not working at LHM, Vivek is an Acute Medicine consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He is also the Director of Quality for MBBS at King’s College London. His commitment to training and knowledge-sharing ensures that the next generation of medical professionals is well-equipped to advance the field of hyperbaric medicine.

Privacy and Dignity of Patients

LHM Healthcare Ltd. makes every effort to ensure that all patients are treated with respect and afforded the appropriate measure of dignity and privacy.

Toilets are available on the premises for everybody including disabled patients. Consultations and examinations are carried out in the privacy of the doctor’s examination room and private changing facilities are available to all patients before and after treatments.

A separate room is available for the assessment and treatment of problem wounds.

Clinical Governance

The service was well equipped and well maintained, with careful attention to all aspects of safety. The staff at the hyperbaric unit were compassionate and caring. The service was appropriately staffed with well qualified doctors, nurses and technical staff, and was responsive to patient’s individual needs. The clinical lead and registered manager provided a strong lead and team working was effective.

The CQC Registered Manager of the LHM Healthcare Group, operating at both Whipps Cross University Hospital (Barts Health Trust) and James Paget University Hospital – Gorleston (Care Standards ACT 2002) is Mr Philip Sayers, BSc.

Mr. Sayers has been involved in the construction and management of clinical Hyperbaric facilities for over 25 years and has been Managing Director of LHM Healthcare since its establishment in November 2000.

Clinical services are provided by the Independent sector Provider LHM Healthcare Ltd., which is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The company operates under its own Clinical Governance arrangements, which are approved and regulated by the CQC.

LHM Healthcare is attached to the Barts Health Trust “Acute & Emergency Medicine” Clinical Academic Group (CAG) and is linked to the dept. of Anaesthetics through its anaesthetic staff.

The Assistant Director of Critical Care and Surgery is the liaison officer responsible for overseeing and monitoring the performance of the Department at Whipps Cross. At the James Paget University hospital, this duty falls to its current Operations Manager.

Our Clinical Lead and Medical Director at the James Paget University Hospital Hyperbaric Unit is Dr Pieter Bothma, a consultant in Anesthetics and Critical Care. Our Medical Director at LHM London Whipps Cross Hyperbaric Unit is Dr Vivek Srivastava.

As an independent Provider, we operate under our own company-specific clinical governance guidelines, but wherever suitable, we use both Trusts’ clinical and operational policies for guidance. And all members of staff are committed to a process of Continual Professional Development.

Two NHS hospital-based centres utilising both Multiplace and a monoplace Hyperbaric Therapy chambers and employing some of the best trained and most dedicated professionals working in the specialised field of Hyperbaric Medicine.
