Important commissioning and referral information for clinicians and patients (from 2025 onwards)

LHM Healthcare provides hyperbaric services from two UK hospital-based facilities, operating under different commissioning arrangements.

At James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth, LHM Healthcare continues to deliver a fully commissioned NHS Hyperbaric service for the East of England region, funded by NHS England in line with the national Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Service Specification.

At Whipps Cross Hospital, London, LHM Healthcare currently provides Category 1 Hyperbaric emergency capability under a temporary NHS England emergency arrangement, alongside non-commissioned hyperbaric activity delivered outside NHS England funding. Commissioned emergency cases take priority at all times.

In July 2018, NHS England published national commissioning policies for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and confirmed funding for the following emergency indications:

Clinicians are encouraged to contact the relevant hyperbaric unit directly for advice on referral pathways, clinical urgency, and applicable funding arrangements.

In 2018, NHS England decided to withdraw routine funding for all other emergency and elective indications. NHSE does not fund research into HBOT but supports the collection of strong clinical evidence via the REDCAP data collection registry.

This will be achieved by providing treatments on an evaluative research basis and collecting clinical data using registries. These treatments will however no longer be funded by NHS England.

LHM Healthcare will continue to accept and treat consultant referrals on an evaluative/ research basis for those conditions, which align most closely with the principles of evidence-based medicine. Patients will be asked to enrol in our NHS-approved evaluative treatment program; patients can choose to make a voluntary donation to our research fund but this not a requirement for receiving treatment.

  • Late radiation tissue injury – Treatment and prophylaxis of osteoradionecrosis)
  • Late radiation tissue injury – Treatment and prophylaxis of radionecrosis of soft tissue.
  • Selected Problem Wounds (eg. compromised grafts and flaps, diabetic foot ulcers, Hypoxic wounds etc.)

Two NHS hospital-based centres utilising both Multiplace and a monoplace Hyperbaric Therapy chambers and employing some of the best trained and most dedicated professionals working in the specialised field of Hyperbaric Medicine.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

In accordance with current commissioning arrangements, the Hyperbaric Unit at Whipps Cross is currently commissioned to accept referrals for critically ill patients with suspected or confirmed gas embolism or decompression illness.

Patients who do not meet the criteria for critical illness will be clinically assessed and, where appropriate, directed to the nearest suitable alternative hyperbaric facility to ensure timely access to care.

For urgent clinical advice, referrers should contact the on-call hyperbaric clinician.
